Jane Austen Tarot

For the 250th anniversary of the birth of Jane Austen, Lo Scarabeo celebrates the great writer with a unique Tarot deck, which will not fail to fascinate her admirers in the world. The anniversary will take place on December 16, 2025.

At first glance, one might think that Jane Austen’s writings do not fit particularly well with the occult nature of the Tarot. Jane Austen's books and the Tarot, however, contain an essentially identical message: the vital importance of balance in our daily lives. Tarot lights up the need for balance with their own structure. The Major Arcana are dedicated to the questions of the spirit, while the Minor Arcana face the minor and most mundane issues of life. The four seeds embody all the elements. In Jane Austen’s Tarot, these four seeds are represented by the Candles, related to passion, energy, and initiative; Cups, which convey aspects of love and emotion; Pens, the rational, analytical, and intellectual side of life; and finally, Denari, which embody physical and tangible questions. Each of these evocative cards is based on a character or scene from Austen's writings, but no knowledge of Austen's work, or the Tarot, is needed to use these cards.

About the Creators

Diane Wilkes conceived of and wrote the book for Storyteller Tarot, a Majors-Only tarot deck that correlates each of the Major Arcana to a story.  In addition to being webmistress of Tarot Passages, she conducts tarot workshops around the country and teaches tarot in the Philadelphia, PA area. She also maintains an astrological and tarot practice.  She has a Master's Degree in English, has been published in numerous magazines, and has been reading the cards for over 30 years. She is presently working on her second book, Tell Me a Tarot Story: Using the Tarot as a Tool for Creativity and developing the cards and writing the book for the Jane Austen Tarot. She is a Certified Tarot Grand Master.

Lola Airaghi (Italy) is an artist who studied at the Scuola del Fumetto di Milano (Milan School of Comics).
